USA
Cycling/NORBA- National governing body, licensing
and racing information
|
|
XC=
cross country. a cross country race is usually from
9mi (beginners) to about 30 miles (pro) long and from
1 to 3 hours in duration. cross country tests endurance
and bike handling skills.
STXC=
short track cross country. a newer spectator friendly
race that consists of a 1/4-1/2 mile track that riders
ride around for 20-25 minutes. this is a very popular
pro race. usually a very exciting race with sprint
finishes!
24
hour races= 24 hours is also a newer type of race.
most entries are teams of 4 or more riders who relay
on a mountain bike cross country course for 24 hours.
some riders go it alone, like tonya, and ride the
24 hours solo. whoever has the most laps at 12 noon
wins the race.
NORBA=
National Off Road Bicycle Association. the US governing
body (under USA
Cycling) of mountain bike racing.
Categories=
Beginner (first year, first timers), Sport (recreational
riders/racers), Expert (aspiring pros or hard core
citizen racers), Semi Pro (men only), Pro (not necessarily
paid to do it, but these are the fastest people in
the country!)
NCS=
National Championship Series. 5 races. pros race for
race results and final series rankings. in 2002 all
categories race for series rankings.
UCI=
Union
Cycliste Internationale, or International Cycling
Union. the governing body for World Cup and World
Championship bicycling.
AMBC=
American Mountain Bike Challenge, a series of
races designated by USA Cycling as a regional event.
Medical
Control= cycling has taken a few big hits over
the past couple of years with high profile riders
testing positive for banned substances. It is the
rider's responsibility to understand the banned substances
and how an innocent rider can test positive for banned
substances. Go to the USADA
(US Anti Doping Assoc.) web site for a comprehensive
list of banned substances and news regarding doping
in sport. Remember: your supplements may contain traces
of banned substances that may result in a positive
test. It is your responsibility for due diligence
to know what is in your supplements and vitamins.
