Guess
what? Cross country was muddy! who knew?
we
all spent quite a long time out there in the mud, crashing,
pedaling, suffering through bikes not working in the
mud, etc...
More
later... Short track on Sunday! Experts go off at 8am,
and the Pros at 12:30...

Today
i am still in Maryland w/ Troy's folks. I am not in
West Virginia watching and supporting Jessica in her
marathon because I am still recovering from my Red Eye,
or Dead Eye, and Troy's mom calls it Tuesday night.
I am sure I have done the RE before, I just can't remember.
But it must have been in the days of me not needing
sleep. As the passengers filed onto the plane Tuesday
night, around 11:45pm, I realized the flight was going
to be pretty full, and i would not be able to sleep
in my own row of seats. This means sleeping sitting
up, which is a trade for the college student, not the
pro athlete.
I
tossed and turned the full 4 hours on the plane. Getting
a minute here and there of sleep. My TV wouldn't turn
off (Frontier Airlines- each seat has its own TV), so
i had the flash and glow of talking heads blinding my
resting eyes. Luckily the anoying/loud talker behind
me didn't talk through the night, but she started up
as we landed and taxied into the airport. It was an
interesting conversation... she was talking, leading
her row partner into questions, and he wasn't biting.
He just said things like "too bad" and "i'm
sorry" and other short answers that kept her attempting
to tell her life story to this poor stranger. The sad
thing is, she was the only person on the plane talking-
as you can imagine at 5am Eastern, when most of the
people were coming from LA or Denver on little or no
sleep, conversation is not a top priority. My top priority
was to be patient getting off the plane, and making
it to bed at Tory's parents house.
once home, i napped for several hours and woke up with
that groggy nasty feeling of not having had enough sleep
and being up all night. A sleepless hangover if you
will. i knew it would be a long recovery. it's worse
than recovering from a long ride. there is little satisfaction
in Red Eye travel- no goals achieved, just making it
from one end of the country to the other.
Troy's
mom and i went to Baja and then to Whole Foods. We were
happily shopping in the produce section, I was walking
around a kiosk to inspect and pick out a nice bulb of
garlic, when two women, staring at me, said, "What
are you doing???", repeating the chorus over and
over. I stood, deer in headlights, staring at them from
behind my tired and sleepless eyes. I looked at Troy's
mom for answers- no help- she had the same deer in headlights
look- and then they finally said something to trigger
my memory- it was Kathy and Theresa of the Cannondale
team. I was so tired and out of it, and not expecting
to see people i knew here in Annapolis (especially bike
people in their civies), that my brain did not click
rapidly enough. Random, small world we live in!
Back
at the homestead i slept a few more hours until it was
time to get up and help make some dinner. i didn't do
much, just cut and clean peppers and help set the table.
It was delicious. Parmesan chicken, sauteed red peppers,
salad with a special oil and vinegar made by Troy's
dad. We sat and quietly ate as we watched on TV President
Reagan's funeral and procession. It was happening only
a few miles from where we sat. I was moved to tears
when Nancy walked up to the casket and gently stroked
it. It was an amazing moment and very powerful. She
wa so composed it was amazing, i couldn't believe she
was not crying herself. It was an emotional procession
and ceremony, but unlike Kennedy, who was currently
in office and had a young family, it was I suppose,
not such a surprise and horrific ending to a life. Making
the ceremony less emotional.

June 04 Today Chile Chick is flying in to West Virgnia
for the Snowshoe National... getting ready for the Marathon-
a 60 mile race, held in the sloppy mud on roots and
steep climbing... it's gonna be a tough one!
Kristi
and her mom are driving and currently on their way.
I get to fly to the East coast this year- thankfully,
but i do have to take the red eye- since it's cheap.
I leve at 11:45 tonite and arrive in Baltimore at 5am.
Then a 6 hour drive, after crashing for a while at Troy's
fam's house. So- we're all getting set for West Virginia
racing! Check back on Thursday for updates and pictures!
